Destinations · Seven places, one country

Where to go in Oman, and when each place is at its best.

Oman is bigger than most people expect, and its corners have very different weather. Pick the month you're travelling and the map below shows which places are at their best, which are fine, and which are better left for another trip.
The seven

A quick introduction to each place, then go deeper on its own page.

Each one has its own full guide. Here's enough to know whether it belongs in your trip.
The capital & the coast
1
Capital · Coast

Muscat

Not one city centre but a string of old harbour towns, beaches and neighbourhoods along the coast, with bare mountains right behind them. Most trips start and finish here, and it deserves more than a night.

Getting there
30–40 min from the airport
Give it
1–2 days
Best months
Oct – Apr
  • Mutrah Corniche & souq
  • Grand Mosque
  • Old Muscat
  • Royal Opera House
  • Boat trips & beaches
The interior & the Hajar mountains
2
Old capital · Forts & souqs

Nizwa

Oman's old capital, where the coast gives way to date gardens and mountains. The fort, the souq and the Friday livestock market are part of everyday life here, not a show for visitors. It's also the natural base for the two mountains below.

From Muscat
About 1.5–2 hrs by road
Give it
1–2 nights
Best months
Oct – Apr
  • Nizwa Fort
  • Friday goat market
  • Bahla & Jabreen
  • Birkat Al Mouz
  • Al Hamra old village
3
The Green Mountain · ~2,000 m

Jabal Akhdar

A plateau high above the plains, with terraced villages, pomegranate and walnut orchards, and in spring, Damask roses. It stays noticeably cooler than the rest of the north all year, which makes it one of the few places that works in summer.

From Muscat
About 2.5 hrs · 4WD only
Give it
1–2 nights
Best months
All year · roses in Apr
  • Terraced villages
  • Rose season
  • Village-to-village walk
  • Cliff-edge viewpoints
  • Summer escape
4
Oman's highest peak · ~3,000 m

Jabal Shams

The "Mountain of the Sun", and right below its summit, a canyon about a kilometre deep that you can walk along the edge of. Quieter and wilder than Jabal Akhdar, with very cold nights in winter and some of the best walking in the country.

From Muscat
About 3–3.5 hrs · 4WD advised
Give it
1 night, 2 to hike
Best months
Oct – Apr
  • Wadi Ghul canyon
  • Balcony Walk
  • Abandoned village of As Sab
  • Rim-side camping
  • Stargazing
The desert
5
Desert · Sand & stars

Wahiba Sands

Golden dunes that start where the paved road runs out. You drive in by 4WD to a camp, then the day slows right down: a dune drive, sunset from the top of a ridge, dinner, and a night sky with almost no light under it. One night works; two is better.

From Muscat
About 2–3 hrs by 4WD
Give it
1–2 nights
Best months
Oct – Mar
  • Desert camps
  • Dune drives
  • Camel rides
  • Wadi Bani Khalid nearby
  • Night sky
The far north
6
Exclave · Fjords & dhows

Musandam

A piece of Oman at the tip of the peninsula, separated from the rest of the country by the UAE. Mountains drop straight into deep, calm inlets, and the best way to see it is from a traditional dhow, with stops to swim, snorkel and watch the dolphins.

From Muscat
~1 hr flight, or a long drive via UAE
Give it
2–3 days
Best months
Oct – Apr
  • Khor Ash Sham
  • Dhow cruise
  • Dolphins
  • Telegraph Island
  • Jebel Harim drive
The far south
7
Dhofar · Monsoon green & frankincense

Salalah

A different Oman, a long way south. From late June to September the monsoon turns the hills green and misty while the north is at its hottest; in winter it's warm beaches and clear skies. Frankincense has been traded from here for thousands of years.

From Muscat
~1 hr 40 flight, or ~1,000 km by road
Give it
3–4 days
Best months
Jul – Sep green · Oct – Mar sun
  • Khareef season
  • Wadi Darbat
  • Mughsail blowholes
  • Frankincense sites
  • Al Baleed
Drive or fly?

Five of the seven are a few hours' drive from Muscat. Two are worth a flight.

The interior and the desert link up naturally into a road trip. Musandam and Salalah sit at opposite ends of the country, so most people fly in and out.
Nizwa
Road · ~1.5–2 hrs
Jabal Akhdar
Road · ~2.5 hrs
Wahiba Sands
Road · ~2–3 hrs
Jabal Shams
Road · ~3–3.5 hrs
Musandam
Flight · ~1 hr
Road · 6+ hrs, via UAE
Salalah

Driving to Musandam means crossing into the UAE and back, so you'll need the right visa and car insurance for both. See the self-drive FAQ
Putting them together

How the seven usually fit into one trip

Three common shapes. Every trip we build is tailor-made, so treat these as starting points rather than packages.
  • 5–6 days

    The short loop

The essentials of northern Oman in under a week: city, forts, mountain, desert.

    1. Muscat1–2 nights
    2. Nizwa1 night
    3. Jabal Akhdar1 night
    4. Wahiba Sands1 night
    5. Back to Muscat

    Works well as a self-drive.

  • 8–10 days

    The classic loop

The route most first-timers take: both mountains, a proper desert stay, and back along the coast.

    1. Muscat2 nights
    2. Nizwa1–2 nights
    3. Jabal Akhdar1 night
    4. Jabal Shams1 night
    5. Wahiba Sands2 nights
    6. Sur & the coast road1 night

See it day by day on the classic route.

  • +2 to 4 days

    Add a far corner

Bolt one of the two flight destinations on to either loop, or visit it on its own.

    1. Any loop above5–10 days
    2. Fly to Musandam2–3 days · Oct to Apr
    3. or fly to Salalah3–4 days · in summer, when the north is too hot

Summer visitors often skip the north entirely and do Jabal Akhdar + Salalah.
