Musandam is Oman, cut off from the rest of Oman.

A narrow peninsula at the top of the Arabian Peninsula, separated from the mainland by the UAE — where the mountains run straight into the sea, fishing villages sit right at the waterline, and a few communities are still only reachable by boat.

    Mountains straight into the sea

    No coastal plain, no gentle beach approach — the limestone just keeps going until it disappears underwater.

    The coastline is cut into narrow sea channels called khors, some of them kilometres deep into the rock.

    A handful of villages still have no road in — a dhow or a small boat is the only way to reach them.

What a dhow cruise actually looks like.

The classic way into Musandam — most first visits start here.

    The harbour and the town disappear behind the boat within minutes.

    Into the khor

    The open sea narrows, and the cliffs start closing in on both sides.

    Dolphins, usually

    Pods often ride alongside the boat — not guaranteed, but common.

    Telegraph Island

    Anchor for a swim and a snorkel around the old cable station ruins.

    Lunch on board

    The boat slows right down. Nowhere else to be for a while.

Beyond the coastline

Some places here still arrive by boat.

A handful of fishing communities sit tucked inside the khors with no road connecting them to anywhere else — Kumzar, at the very northern tip, is the best-known. Boats aren't a tourist novelty here; for some villages, they're still the only way in or out.

Questions people usually ask about Musandam.

Can I visit Musandam as a day trip from Dubai?

Yes, and plenty of visitors do — it's a shorter drive from the UAE than from Muscat. We can arrange it either way, but check what visa or border requirements apply to your nationality before booking.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer?

No — the snorkelling stops are shallow and calm, and a life jacket is always available on board.

Is the mountain side worth adding on?

If you've got the extra day, yes — Jebel Harim feels like a completely different country to the coast, and very few visitors bother to go up.

What's the best time of year to go?

October through April, for calmer seas and cooler days. Summer heat and occasional swell make the crossing less comfortable.
